For LCD monitors typically use the term “native” resolution. It is in this resolution is achieved optimal picture quality. Therefore, when choosing LCD monitors at once is targeted specifically at this resolution (it is called by different manufacturers in different ways: the optimum, recommended, etc.) because you do not want to switch your monitor to another, non-native resolution. Because it automatically leads to a deterioration of image quality.
On the other hand – the higher the resolution, the more space you get to work – a place for images, for tools, palettes, CD player, etc. But most importantly – a large monitor lets you see more of the image at 100%. And it is very important when editing digital photos.
For 17 inch monitor we would recommend choosing the one for which the native resolution is 1024×768 or 1280×1024. For monitors up to 20 inches – with a native resolution of 1600×1200. To monitor more than 20 inches (which is already automatically means expensive and rather qualitative) should choose a resolution recommended by the manufacturer – for example, to monitor Apple Cinema HD 23-inch size the native resolution is 1920×1200. Keep in mind that at such large monitors text looks very small and work with it – sheer torture. I, for instance, writing this in text mode, increasing by three hundred percent.
